Lucia Markey is the 11 month old daughter of Ed and Hyacinth Markey of Elk River. She was born with a rare genetic disorder called Primary Hyperoxaluria. The only cure is a liver transplant and due to the damage already caused from this condition, she also needs a kidney transplant. The benefit is to help offset the transplant and ongoing care expenses. Currently she is being treated with intensive hemodialysis 6 hours a day at 7 days a week at the U of M and she also needs peritoneal dialysis 12 hours a day at home. Lucia’s mother is a pediatric nurse who has taken a leave of absence to care for her. Her father has reduced his work hours to assist with Lucia’s care and tend to her 4 year old brother, Edwin.
